*   U-21 Football Championship Group B – Last week the Ballymartin U-21’s could not field a team as there was the impending Relegation match to play.  On Sunday past they travelled to Drumaness for a 12:30 throw-in.  The final score was Drumaness 3-7 vs. 1-10 Ballymartin.  This Sunday they have a home game which will have to played locally as our pitch has gone under some developments as of late, venue yet to be confirmed at time of going to press.

*   Saturday the 5th November came with anticipation...  With several players having put their immigration plans on hold (due to the same relegation match being cancelled some two weeks previous), so as Ballymartin could secure their second division status for the incoming season.

Ballymartin started off on the best foot and had a four point lead early in the first half and shortly thereafter Annaclone got their first goal.  Annaclone capitalised on a bad Ballymartin hand pass taking a point, bringing the score even at 1-1 v 0-4.  Annaclone took control from here on and went to the half leading by a point - Annaclone 1-3 Vs. 0-5 Ballymartin.  Ballymartin couldn’t get into the swing of things; there was very little success with the breaking-ball from kick-outs.  This same condition hit Ballymartin in the Championship... Not capitalising on their scores, with too many wide balls and poor passing.  In the second half Ballymartin could only rally up four points.  Congratulations to Annaclone!  And commiserations to Ballymartin, who will have to work harder and fight their way back UP, next season.  ACFL Division 2 2011 - 05/11/2011 - Annaclone 2-9 vs. 0-9 Ballymartin.  The Club and Committee would like to thank everyone from near and far for the best wishes over the past two months, in the build-up to the Championship and would like to thank those that are set to immigrate to Australia and would like to wish them every success in their future.

*   All youth coaches who assisted with underage teams this season are requested to attend a meeting tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 9pm in the clubrooms.

*   Ballymartin Primary School are collecting the GAA Coaching Days coupons from the Irish News which runs until end of November.  It would be great if any of you Irish News readers could collect these tokens and pass them to the school or to Lisa Cunningham.

*   The Seniors were disappointed after their Championship defeat and were all pumped and ready for action on Sunday for their relegation battle with Annaclone.  They were at ‘full throttle’ in the pouring rain, tearing up the Clonduff pitch, in a pre-match warm-up session.  After being called into the changing rooms and being notified that the match was being called off due the weather, the lads were frustrated over the cancelation after the amount of effort put in place.  After discussions, the relegation match date has still NOT been confirmed.  With Ballymartin set to lose several players to immigration this week, Annaclone seem to be holding of a rematch at their earliest convenience; which we would have hoped would have been played on Monday night past.

*   Irish Dancing Classes for all age groups are set to be held on Friday’s at the Clubrooms on Pat's Road from 6 to 7pm.  Please contact Seaneen on 07547315848 for date of commencement.

*   Yesterday evening saw the second session of the Physical activity classes for women at the Clubrooms on Pat's Road with large numbers attending.  These take place from 6.45pm to 7.45pm, cost £3 each session.  Activities include 2 weeks x core strength, 2 weeks x circuit training and 2 weeks boxercise.  All Welcome!  And it isn’t too late to enrol.

*   Pride of place this week goes to the U16 boys who were crowned South Down ‘C’ Championship winners on Saturday after defeating a Drumclone.  The torrential rain left conditions difficult, but it was Ballymartin who adapted best in the first half.  With defenders Daniel McBennett, Sean Harper and Kristopher Rooney showing great awareness and hunger, the Drumclone attack found it difficult to register scores.  Ballymartin played with high tempo and were rewarded with a string of points from Ethan Smyth, Niall Quinn and the industrious Ross Cunningham, as well as two fine goals from the strong midfield partnership of Ryan Newell and Sean Sloan.  Ballymartin held a comfortable lead at the break but found it hard to reach the same heights in the second period.  Drumclone played with much more purpose but the continued efforts of goalkeeper Jordan Fitzpatrick, Cathal Greene, JJ Cunningham and Owen Collins ensured a healthy lead was retained.  Following the introduction of substitute Patrick Quinn there was renewed effort across the field resulting in a late third goal scored by Ross Cunningham.  Final score Ballymartin 3-12 vs. 1-8 Drumclone.  Well done to all the panel members and the management team of Rory Cunningham and Adrian McLaughlin.  The team now face the East Down champions in the County Final (opposition and date to be confirmed).  Ballymartin U-16 Panel:  - Back Row; Ross Cunningham, Cathal Greene, Daniel Burden, Daniel McBennett, Sean Harper, Conor Smyth, Dan Sloan, Ryan JJ Cunningham, Kristopher Rooney, Newell, Shane Sloan and Owen Collins - Front Row; Geoffrey Greene, Blaine McCulla, Niall Quinn, Ronan Grant, Ethan Smyth, Jordan Fitzpatrick, Joseph Higgins and Patrick Quinn

*   The U11 panel are attending a South Down Blitz this Sunday morning at 10.30am in Longstone. Six clubs will be represented. Children to assemble at Pats Rd at 10am sharp and are reminded to take waterproofs and football gloves – Glove with the Club Crest embellished on them can be purchased from Colin Quinn.

*   The Reserves had a tough match on Sunday evening when they travelled to Burren.  Under heavy ground conditions, the lads played a good first half and were behind by five points.  In the second period Burren came out strong and out-classed a tired looking Ballymartin whom some of the lads had already played in the earlier encounter with Liatroim.  At the Final whistle Burren had shown their strength in the score-line Burren 3-13 vs. 1-06 Ballymartin.

*   Ballymartin Seniors travelled to Liatroim for their Penultimate match of the League.  A tough match was expected and granted.  Ballymartin found it hard to win the ball in the mid-field but pressed on, keeping Liatroim to a four point advantage at the half.  In the second Ballymartin kept their spirits up, and fought back from seven points down to finish the game separated by a goal.  Some great play from Patrick and Sean McManus, Ryan O’Hare, Ciaran and Conor O’Hare, Peter and Paul Fitzpatrick, Michael Higgins and the ever present Doran’s; Adrian and Captain James.

*   Lotto Numbers 1, 15, 20, 27.  No Jackpot Winners – Next week’s Lotto Jackpot £10,300.  5 People Matched 3;  Congratulations to: Christine Rooney, M. McCourgan, T. Eastwood, Mary Colgan & Barry Cunningham.

*   Commiserations to the U-14 boys who were defeated by a much stronger An Riocht side in the Final of the ‘B Championship’ last Saturday; An Riocht 3-12 vs. 1-5 Ballymartin.  Despite starting the game strongly, Ballymartin soon found the opposition causing damage and a string of points and two goals in the first period set An Riocht up for victory.  Goalkeeper Jordan Fitzpatrick, defenders Niall Greene, Joe Higgins and Conor Cunningham tried their hardest in the second half.  Their efforts were rewarded when Ryan Greene netted early in the second half.  Despite some impressive points from Ethan Smyth and the energetic Ronan Grant, the boys from An Riocht continued to score at will and were deserving winners on the day.  Despite this defeat, the Club Committee and members are most proud of the teams’ achievements this season and thank the player’s, management and supporters for all their effort.  Also thanks to the club supporters who turned up on Saturday to cheer on the U-14's and also to the large number (18) of sponsors who wished the team well in the match programme.

*   All roads lead to Mayobridge on Saturday for the Final of the U-14B Boys Championship.  After an impressive win last week in the Semi Final over Mitchell's, the boys face neighbours An Riocht in the final this Saturday at 1.30pm.  A large club support is expected.   This will be tripleheader event; McAvoy Construction LLP - South Down U-14A Championship @ 15:00 Shamrocks vs. Rostrevor; U-14B Championship @ 13:30 An Riocht vs. Ballymartin; U-14C Championship @ 2:00 Atticall vs. Longstone.

*   The date for the U-18's Championship game against Longstone has still to be confirmed.

*   The Seniors had a great away game to Shamrocks 1-8 vs. 1-10 Ballymartinlast Friday.  This was great result after the recent turbulent performance.  Their next match will be on 9/11in the Around a Pound IFC, when Ballymartin take on St John Bosco, in Castlewellan with a 15:30 throw-in.

*   Well done to the U14 girls who had a most comfortable win in the semi final of the B championship.  A great show of support on Sunday at Glassdrumman field gave a morale boost and was a helping hand in Ballymartin U-14 Ladies showing Annaclone how Semi-Finals are fought and won.  The score of 5-18 to 0-4 doesn’t really do Annaclone justice, they fought hard the entire game and blocking was by the book.  Ballymartin girls again, played a brilliant game of football and they're hard work has really paid off.  The full panel of 21 girls all played a part in getting this far, let’s give one more big push girls, the Final is your for the taking well done and good luck on Sunday 18th September when they take on Saul in the Final.

Ballymartin GAC Club Notes on Sunday 28 August -

BALLYMARTIN GAC Club Notes

*   Repatriation of waste.  NIEA took control of the field last week and have started with the removal of the waste in the new field.  No un-authorised personnel are allowed beyond the fenced-off area for Health and Safety Reasons.  The Committee would like to thank the local residents of Pats Road for their patients during the removal of the waste and hope that they aren’t inconvenienced too much with the noise and traffic.  We are sure that the residents want to see the waste removed from the area as much as the Club.

*   Thanks go out to ALL the Club Mentors and Coaches for their support over the summer period and previous 12 months.  The Clubs thirteen teams wouldn’t be able to compete if it weren’t for your time and effort over the year coaching and running to matches, some coaches out four and five times per week.  Thanks to the parents/guardians that prepare the players for matches and especially for those that make it to support the teams during the year.

*   The Committee and Club Members would like to thank Seaneen Trimble for coaching the boys and girls in the Ballymartin area Irish Dancing in the Club Rooms over the summer.  Seaneen will be resuming her dance class in the after school club in St. Joseph’s P.S. after school settles in, details later.

*   U-8's attended a Blitz at Riocht last Saturday morning and had a most enjoyable day with games against Mayobridge, Warrenpoint, Longstone and An Riocht.  The date for the last series of Blitz’ has still to be determined.

*   Coaching for U-8's and U-10's will take place on Monday evening at 5.30 and 6.30pm respectively.

*   The U-12's lost in their last league game of the season on Sunday morning to a strong Longstone side.  Ballymartin played their best football in the first half but tired in the second period when the hosts went through to score three unanswered goals.  All children have to be commended for their efforts throughout this league campaign ending up a respectable mid table position.  Many thanks to Christopher, Eamonn and John for all their efforts.  Coaching for this age bracket will continue on Tuesday evenings at 6.00pm.

*   The U-14's played a great game of football last Tuesday, defeating Drumgath comfortably in their last of the group stages of the Championship and end-up top of their section.   On Monday past they travelled to Mitchells in the Semi-Final of the Championship, details next week.  Please check club ballymartingaa.com/ facebook.com/pages/Ballymartin-GAC/308006110417 for result of this game.

*   The U-16's had a 3-14 to 1-7 win over Drumclone last week in the Third Round of their Championship games.  Tomorrow night they play away to neighbours Longstone in the final of the group games at 7.00.  Local support would be most welcome.  If Ballymartin win this game there will be three-way-tie for the top of this section.  Ballymartin will host Glenn on Sunday afternoon at 5.15pm in a play-off.  If we loose tomorrow evening Ballymartin will enter the 'C' Championship

 *   The date for the U18's next Championship game against Longstone has still to be confirmed.

*   The Reserves had a challenging match against local rivals Atticall on Sunday past, in South Down Reserve League Atticall 4-8 vs. 2-18 Ballymartin.  This was a great result for Ballymartin, the next game is away to to our rivals from the South.  On September 4, they travel to An Riocht for an 18:30 throw-in.

*   The Seniors played their Clann na Banna match in St. Patrick’s Park, Bryansford on Friday last.  This started-out as a run of the mill score for score game, with Ballymartin taking the early lead.  With balls being easily dispossessed on the wet surface (water-logged in places), Ballymartin started to flounder a little.  The score-line could’ve read a different story had Clann na Banna not hit so many wides.  This was a disappointing performance after the spirit shown in the previous two matches.  Final score Ballymartin 0-7 vs. 0-16 Clann na Banna. On September 2nd the Seniors travel to Shamrocks, Pairc Esler for an 18:45 throw-in.

*   U-14 Ladies travelled to Burren last Wednesday evening for the Quarter Final of the Championship and what a game it was!  After a slow start the girls got to work against a very strong Burren.  This was a great match with end to end football from both sides and at one stage a point was all that separated the two teams.  Ruth and Jemma got into a bit of a tangle when the two collided for the one the ball, but bravely soldiered on.  Burren started to claw back a few scores and a goal, the Ballymartin Ladies dug-in and gave a very strong last 10mins that secured their place in the Semi-Final against Annaclone on September 4th.  A well deserved win for the girls - Final score Burren 4-6 vs. 5-11 Ballymartin. Well done girls bring on the Semi-Final, this will be on the 4 September against Annaclone with the venue yet to be confirmed.

*   U-16 Ladies had a bad run of the green against a very strong Saul in the Quarter Final of the Championship.

*   The Senior Ladies travelled to Saval on Saturday past to compete against Rostrevor in the Intermediate Club Championship Final.  Although I wasn’t available for the match, I understand that the ladies put up a good fight after a long campaign.  The Final score read Rostrevor 3-11 vs. Ballymartin 1-10.

*   Lotto Numbers 2, 17, 18, 22.  No Jackpot Winners - Next week’s Jackpot is now a massive  £11,000.  11 people matched 3 numbers, congratulations to; Siobhain Byrne, Dermot Cullen, Stephen O Hare, Tony Harrison, M. Curran, Seamus Rooney, Robin Murphy, Mary Rudge, Joanne Cunningham, Catherine Cassidy & Martin O Sullivan.

*    The Minors played Ardglass in the Minor Championship yesterday evening (details next week).  Last week’s match was cancelled at late notice.  The date for our next game against Longstone has still to be confirmed.

*    The Reserves are to travel to Mayobridge tonight for a 7.15 throw-in.  On Sunday past, they had lots more to deal with than the opposing 15 in Rostrevor.  A win was denied due to a point not being noted by the Referee, even when the Rostrevor umpire gave the score.  All the same the draw puts Ballymartin two points behind Warrenpoint with 4 games to play.

*   The Seniors match against Clann na Banna this Friday night will take place in Bryansford‘s home ground, St. Patricks Park, with the throw-in @7pm.  This was scheduled as a home game for Ballymartin, as the pitch is closed for development, ALL club matches will be on neutral territory.

Last Friday’s match was a nail-biting first twenty minutes of frustration for both Ballymartin Players and Spectators.  Annaclone opened the score-line with a point which was soon answered by Ballymartin.  The following 16 minutes that ensued, had the Ballymartin spectators wondering what was going on with the team, as Annaclone pulled further away with a nine point gain (0-10 v 0-1).  The tide started to turn after the Lads rallied together and clawed back some scores.  With two minutes left in the first period Ballymartin was awarded a penalty that was put away by Noel Kerr and by half-time the score-line read 0-10 v 1-7.  With the second half started the wind let-up a little but the showers of rain fell, leaving the Ballymartin lads scrambling for gloves and found the wet grass hard to get a footing.  Fighting strong Ballymartin was ahead by four points after putting a ball in the net.  In the last four minutes Annaclone clawed back a few points, with tension rising the final whistle blew, with Ballymartin winning 0-16 Vs. 2-11.  Great play from all the team, for pulling together when you were down by nine points and in the face of adversity you stood up to the challenge.

*   Best wishes to the U-14 Ladies who travel to Burren tonight in the U-14 Championship Final throw in 7pm.  The Ladies had a decisive win when they last played Burren 10 days ago, so they will be going in to this Final with confidence.

*   Best wishes to the U-16 Ladies who will be travelling to Saul on Sunday 28 for the U-16 Championship Quarter Final against Saul throw in 12.30pm.  The last meeting of these two, Ballymartin came out the victors by 10 points.

*   Best wishes to the Senior Ladies who travel to Saval on Saturday 27 to compete against Rostrevor in the Intermediate Championship Final throw in 6.30pm.  After the Championship the ladies have a break from competitive matches until 17 September, when they have to play a rescheduled match against Shamrocks.

*   Lotto Numbers 3, 8, 13, 18 No Jackpot Winners - Next week’s Jackpot stands at £10,900.  13 people matched 3 numbers, congratulations to; R. McCawley, Paul Shields, Jackie McConville, Leo Murphy, Russell Drew, Kevin Boden, Sean Quinn, Betty Milligan, Martina McGurgan, Mark Smyth, Rita Quinn,  Jenny Murney & Bru McCarvey

Ballymartin GAC Club Notes on Sunday 14 August -

BALLYMARTIN GAC Club Notes

*   Ballymartin GAC pitch at Pats Road will be closing after training on Wednesday August 17.  Therefore NO Unauthorized Personnel are permitted on the playing fields from Thursday August 18.  Access to the gym is open as normal.  Anyone looking to join the gym can do so by contacting Damien or Lisa.   The pitch will be closed for improvements and to allow access to the New/Lower pitch by Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), to repatriate waste that was illegally dumped in 2003 approx, when the new pitch was being developed.

*   Ballymartin GAC has arranged a trip to Croke Park on Saturday 10th September 2011, as part of the ‘GAA Social Initiative’.  The Initiative uses the GAA Club network as a vehicle to engage “the over 50’s” who are not currently participating in local community life.  On the day you will get a Coach to Croke Park, a tour of the Stadium and meal, all for the princely sum of £10.00.  If you wish to be included on the trip, booking’s can be made with the £10 deposit (Non-refundable), payable to either Lisa Cunningham or Ed Poland in the Ballymartin Inn.  As space is limited to coach capacity, only 33 places are available and will be reserved on a first come, first served basis, early booking is advised.  This tour is aimed at both Members and Non-Members alike.   The bus is almost fully booked, please invite your friends and neighbors along and make a day of it.  Please also note that we need to know meal choices prior to the trip taking place and to contact Lisa Cunningham or Ed Poland for these.  A full itinerary for the day is now available; details are displayed in Ballymartin Inn and Clubrooms Pat's Road.

*   Well done to all who participated in the Social 7 aside tournament (old boys) in Longstone last Saturday.  Ballymartin played attractive football and won all their games in the group stages defeating St. Michaels of Meath, Drumgath and Longstone.  In the quarter final Ballymartin did enough to overcome a stern An Riocht challenge before facing overall winners Clonduff in the semi-final.  Clonduff raced into an early lead only for Ballymartin to draw level with minutes left.  At this stage the old legs began to tire and a fitter Clonduff side scored two late points to claim victory.  An enjoyable day was had by all.  Many thanks to Longstone for the invitation.

*   The U-8's took part in the annual Longstone Tournament last Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed their day.  After groups stage games against Burren, Glassdrumman, Warrenpoint, Atticall and Rostrevor the children bowed out in the play off stages after a defeat to An Riocht.

*   At the time of going to press it is expected that the U-8's will be participating in the Atticall sports this Sunday (weather dependent).  Parents please contact Claire or Liam on Saturday to confirm.

*   After a long break the U-10's get back into action on Saturday when they participate in a Blitz at Annaclone.  Children departing at 9.15AM and are reminded to take a light lunch and waterproofs.

*   The U-12 team suffered a defeat on Sunday; Saval 4-7 vs. 2-5 Ballymartin.  Despite being short some regulars, the team put in a gallant display and were in front with 10 minutes to play.  However the leaking of three late goals meant the hosts took the points.  No game this weekend.  The last game of the season takes place on Sunday week, with an away trip to Longstone.

*   Best wishes to Jordan Fitzpatrick who suffered a bad injury at training last week, breaking two fingers. Jordan has been in fine form this season and will be badly missed by both the U-14 and U-16's teams. The players, management and committee wish him a speedy recovery.  The U-14's continued their unbeaten run last week with another win in the Championship, this time against Shamrocks B 3-10 vs. 4-14 Ballymartin.  This was a tough contest which ebbed and flowed with the lead changing at various times.  Like many games this season the Lilywhites had a strong final quarter to claim victory.   On Monday past the U-14's hosted Clan na Banna in the Championship (details next week), while next Monday they travel to Drumgath.  If results continue to be favourable it is likely the lads make the play off stages.

*   The U-16's put in a disappointing performance last week against Glenn 7-8 vs. 2-6 Ballymartinin the Championship.   Let’s hope for a much improved display next Thursday evening when they play Drumclone.

*   The minors were due to host Ardglass in the latest round of the Championship, also they were to host Tullylish in the League, and both games were for yesterday evening (details next week).  This game will be the LAST competitive match played on the current field - Good Luck to All of the Squad.  Our next game is away to Longstone on 30th August.

*   The Reserves are away to Rostrevor on August 21 with an 18:30 throw-in.

*    Well done to the Senior Men after the destruction caused on the 12 August; Ballymartin 4-12 vs. 0-6 Drumgath in the ACFL Division 2 League.  The next match will be away to Annaclone with a 7PM throw-in.

*   The U-14 girls had an impressive win over Burren on Sunday and now sit in second place in the League.  There were strong performances in every sector of the field.  U-14 Ladies headed out onto the field for their last league game today and again they didn’t disappoint, being a determined bunch with a couple of players missing they were confident they could find the energy for one last winning score line before the Championship.  All credit to Burren, they didn’t lie down and fought a hard battle, but our girls were proving too hard to mark.  A lot of movement from all the girls, some great tactical play leading to well placed scores and some brilliant saves from the goalie kept Burren at bay which meant the girls were the winning team on the day with a score line of Ballymartin 8-13 Vs. Burren 0-2.  Well done girls and all the best for the Championship which will now take place on Tuesday the 23rd of August in Burren, throw in 7pm.

*   U-16 Ladies are currently set to play away to Saul in the Championship on Sunday 28 August at 12.30pm.

*   Well done to the Senior Ladies - Intermediate Football Championship Quarter-Finals on Aug 13th – winning over Mayobridge and making their way to the Championship Finals on August 27 which will be held in Saval.
