NOTES
*   Ballymartin GAC held their AGM on the 1st December, in the Club Rooms on Pats Road.  All seats from last year were carried forward with no objections nor motions, with a good turnout of members as usual.  Colin Cunningham, the returning Chairman was thanked for his hard work at the pitch.  Colin at one point said, that it was easy to think that he had done the work all on his own, as he was visibly on-site, daily, but he assured us that there was more than him doing the work and he gave praise and thanks to Colin Quinn for the massive amount of behind the scenes work on the ‘Field Development‘ also, to the massive amount of paper pushing and grant application work done by Marie McKibbin.  He said that if not for the dedication and effort put in by these two individuals that the field would NOT be ready for fielding a team this year.  In the Chairman’s address Colin stated that a lot of work was required and to that the backing of the club members was called for.  More parents are required to take an active roll in the club, be it an hour at the pitch; instead of dropping of the children and going to do the shopping, if the parents could please stay and help out, there are plenty of small tasks that could be carried out by the parents, alleviating the pressure placed on the coaching staff and mentors (who are already giving up their time to coach the children and most of them have no children on the field when they are coaching).  Coaches and mentors are to meet in the New Year to work out a rota system with the parents.

*   The Seniors had an uneventful start in round one of the ‘Around a Pound’ Intermediate Championship on Sunday past, when they met Shamrocks in Clonduff.  This was a long and agonising first thirty minutes, with neither team making much of an effort.  After fifteen minutes the score was 0-04 vs. 0-02, and it would be a further seven minutes till the next score, when Niall Cunningham bolstered the Shamrocks well ahead after finding the Ballymartin net, quickly followed by a point from Jack Haughey.  At the half Ballymartin trailed by six points (0-03 vs. 1-06).  The second half began as the first, with Shamrocks slowly and painfully tapping points over the bar and with six minutes, remaining Ballymartin’s Ciaran O’Hare found the net from the penalty spot.  This lifted the Whites spirits, but this came far too late in the day!  Ballymartin played some decent football in the dying five but could do nothing to close the gap.  Final score Shamrocks 1-12 vs. 1-05 Ballymartin.

Conor Cunningham and Paul Quinn dominated midfield with James Quinn, Matthew Brennan and Matthew Cunningham stalwarts in defence.  Baileghlas ran out easy winners with goals from Caolan O'Hare, Aidan McVeigh and Sean Quinn and a super point from Éoin McVeigh.  The whole team played exceptionally well.  Training continues tonight Wed at 6.45pm-745pm sharp in Glassdrumman.  Next match Sunday 9th June in Saval @11am.

BALLYMARTIN GAC Club Notes

*   Congratulations to the Benji Ward and the Down Senior Ladies team who won LGFA “Tesco Homegrown” NFL Final last Saturday 11th May in Parnell Park, Dublin, when the Down Ladies won by a point, 2-06 vs. 0-11 Armagh.  Congratulations to Ballymartin’s, Lauren Cunningham (2 points)and Sinead Brannigan.

*   Seniors this Friday 24 May, make the trip to Carryduff for a 7:30 PM throw-in.

*   Reserves match was called off last week due to members playing in the Down Golf Classic.  This Sunday 26 may, the Reserves are away to Saval for a 6:00pm throw-in.  The lads will be looking to right the wrongs of their first match of the season when they faltered at the last ten minutes, allowing Saval the victory.  Ronan and Sean will have their work cut out for them.   Good luck lads.

*   Minors matches are postponed due to exams and Baileghlas’ next match is Saturday 8 June in Glasdrumman againstAn Ríocht

*   U-16 next match is on 13 June at home to Kilclief.

*   U-14 lads played a hard match against Longstone last week with a gruelling wind being the deciding factor of the match.  Baileghlas led the first half by 12 points.  This was turned upside-down during the second half, when the strong wind and Longstone forwards kept the ball around the Baileghlas goal line.  On Monday past the lads went Clann Na Derg .  Tomorrow night (Thu 23) Baileghlas take on Savalat 7:30 PM, in St Colman's Kilkeel, Referee: Michael O Rourke.

*   The U-12s lads had a resounding result last Sunday when they travelled to Drumgath and held them to Drumgath 1-02 vs. 5-08 Baileghlas.  This Sunday they will be hosting Mitchels in Glassdrumman @ 11:00Am Referee: Ronan Mc Alinden.

*   The U-10's have now had three matches under their belt in the Mourne League.  With each game, improvement canbe seen and some of these players are now coming of age.  The first game of the season was against Glassdrumman, and with a few players short and still a bit rusty, the game was over by half time, but these young players still tried very hard.  Game two was against the Stone and a massive all round improvement was evident from the previous week, but just fell short of stamina in the later stages of the match.  The coaches were delighted the way they played throughout this game.  Last week was against Atticall and a hard fought and sporting game was played in St Colmans.  Unfortunately, the result went against us but some great performances stood out.  Daniel McAlinden who has been this year’s find in goals, excelled along with Amy Higgins, Nadine Eakins and Cormac Greene standing out in particular.  The coaches would like to commend the determination and effort these young children give each week in a difficult league, yet play with a smile on their faces.  Coaching each Friday at Carrigenagh Rd at 6.25pm sharp.

*   Intermediate Ladies hostTeconnaught on Saturday 25-May in An Riocht with a 7:00PM throw-in.

*   U-16 Ladies had a great win on Sunday against a young Annaclone team.  An excellent team performance by all andgreat commitment, and well done to Fiona on her penalty save.  The final score Annaclone 2-06 vs. 7-15 Ballymartin.

*   The U-14 Ladies game has been rearranged, for Tuesday the 28th of May at home in St Colmans at 6:45pm.  Coaching asusual.
*   Lotto Numbers for Sunday 19 May 2013; 2, 15, 22, 30.  No Jackpot Winners - Next week’s Jackpot now stands @ £12,000.  One Person matched 3 numbers, congratulation to Kelli Murphy.  This Sunday 26 May Lotto ROTA Team Y. Fitzpatrick.

U-14 Paul higgins Debut match - Man of the Match - April 2013  *   Attached Image:   _DSC7489.jpg     Caption:   Baileghlas U-14 Man-of-the-Match, was awarded to Paul Higgins, Ballymartin, after last week’s brilliant performance against Burren in the South Down Div 3. U-14 League.  This was Paul’s first competitive match for the Club, and the Coach was astounded at the effort and determination displayed by Paul.  Club Coach Colin Quinn said he was against singling out an individual for their merits but he said he had to make an exception, as Paul, only four weeks prior had never played Gaelic Football competitively before.  Well done Paul; and best of luck in the future.

NOTES

*   A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the DOWN Ladies team on winning their NFL Div3 Semi-Final match on Sunday; Down 3-09 vs. 3-08 Longford, in Clones, Monaghan.  When in the dying four minutes Down came back with two late goals and a pointed free to squeeze past Longford on a score of 3-09 to 3-08.  Well done to Benji and the panel and to Ballymartin’s Lauren Cunningham and Sinead Brannigan.   Next match is the NFL3 Final against Armagh on Saturday May 11th

*   Ballymartin U-16’s had a hard match last Thursday when they were defeated by Longstone 2-12 vs. 1-08 Ballymartin.   Tomorrow (Thursday) night they travel to Aghaderg for a 7:30 throw-in.

*   The Baileghlas U-14 lads played a great game last Monday when up against Burren.  Unfortunately the match took a nose-dive for Ballymartin in the last ten minutes, when Burren came from three point down at the half to win; Baileghlas 0-09 V 3-06 Burren.  The Coach had nothing but praise for the lads after the match, when taking into account the previous week’s destruction, at the hands of Division two Feile winners Drumgath (who have been placed into their correct div2).  The lads came back after a great defeat and holding their heads high brought the game to Burren and only lost out to a few soft goals that were virtually unavoidable.  Special recognition was awarded to Paul Higgins (pictured), who before the match had not (never ever), played competitively for any club or in any league.  Club Coach Colin Quinn went on to say; the dedication and effort put in by Paul over the previous four coaching sessions had lifted the mood of the team and nothing less than 100% effort during the match is what was expected from all players.  On Monday past the lads hosted An Ríocht @ St Colman's Kilkeel, with Referee: Brendan Rice.  Tonight (1at May), the U-14s travel to Mitchels for a 7:15PM throw-in.  Then next Monday (6th may), the U-14’s are on the road to St. John Bosco for 7:15 PM throw-in.

NOTES

*   Last Friday the seniors had hell to pay when they travelled to Bredagh for their Round 2 of the ACFL Div2 League.  After a long fought battle and Ballymartin two men down, Bredagh came back and took control of the match winning by a goal; Bredagh 2-09 vs. 1-09 Ballymartin.  This Friday they host Dundrum for their Round 3 match in an Riocht @ 7:15 PM.  Referee: Neill Cousins.

*   Reserves won 4-12 vs. 2-07 Mayobridge.  The reserves had a great win away againsttop of the league Mayobridge on Sunday evening.  The young whites came out all guns blazing and wholly rattled up 1-07 with some great scores including a great team goal sublimely finished by Ross Cunningham.  With Shaun Harper, Paddy Greene and Kristopher Rooney winning a lot of clean, breaking balls in the middle of the field, the young whites took control of the first half and Johnny Cranson and Canice Quinn got two great scores from play after swift moves with the hard working JJ Cunningham and Conor Smith.  Liam Byrne pulled off two cat like reaction saves to stop certain goals.  The half time score was 1-07 to 0-02 to the whites.  The second half was always going to be vital to get the first scores and Ross Cunningham again came up trumps with a great free kick after another lung busting run by Shaun Harper.  In The second half; the half back line of Canice Quinn, Shane Sloan and Owen Collins really came into their own and their end to end running was too much for their opponents, allowing the lads to start attack after attack for the forwards and the forwards almost simultaneously responded with a goal right of the top drawer from Darren O Hare. (the shower really worked) and late goals from Super Subs John Fitzpatrick and Ronan McCartan.  Mayobridge often hit the long ball into a big full-forward line, however tireless work from (Captain) Michael Phillips and his corner men Christopher Quinn and Christopher Cunningham continued to snuff out any attack.  The whites were delighted after the game and all eyes are going to be getting a second win on the trot this week when; on Sunday the lads travel to take on local rivals Glasdrumman @ 6: 00 PM.

*   The Minors had a poor result last Tuesday; Glenn 2-12 vs. 0-08 Baileghlas.  Last night they hosted Cill Breachtain; results next week, while on Tuesday - 30 April @ 7:30pm they host Ballyholland in Glasdrumman.

*   U-16’s suffered another blow last Thursday when they fell; Ballymartin 5-10 V 6-14 Ardglass.  Tomorrow night they are on the road to meet Longstone@ 7:15 PM , Referee: Martin Rawlinson.

*   U-14 saw their League kick-off on Monday night past when they hosted Burren, details next week, when on Monday 29 they host an Ríocht @ 7:00 PM, Venue: St Colman's Kilkeel.

*   U-10 Mourne league started on Monday evening with Ballymartin’s first game away to Glassdrumman.

*   U-6 & U-8 coaching will take place every Saturday morning at St Columbans College from 10-30 to 11-30 SHARP.  Please ensure that children have their mouth guards with them for training and matches.

*   Intermediate Ladies Played some great football on Saturday evening, however the girls did not shine and seemed to tire late in the second half.  Ballymartin with a healthy lead of five points and twenty minutes to play, allowed Clonduff to push forward and maintained a constant onslaught of attacks on the Ballymartin Goals, putting grave pressure on the defence.  Luckily, Sinead and her steadfast keeping, kept the ball out of her nets with four great saves in this final quarter.  Ballymartin looked tired and allowed five points to be scored, giving Clonduff a late DRAW.  Next Saturday the ladies are away to Rostrevor for a 7PM throw-in.

*   U-16 Ladies had a great result on Sunday when theytravelled to Teconnaught, and really brought a bit of class with them.  Although short on numbers, they more than made up for it on the field.  It was an exhilarating game to watch from start to finish with end to end scores well matched until 10 minutes to go, when Ballymartin decided to up the pace, leaving Teconnaught to watch as the points flew over the bar well done girls.  The final score Teconnaught 2-08 vs. 3-11 Ballymartin.  Next outing for the U-16s is on Sunday May 12, when the girls host Loughinisland in St. Colmans Kilkeel.  Coaching as usual.

*   U-14 Ladies play their second round of the League on Sunday 28 April when they host RGU Downpatrick at St. Colmans Kilkeel, Coaching as usual.
