*   The ACFL Div. 1 match on Saturday Oct 8th turned out to be a nail biter, with everything potentially hanging in the balance for a Division One survival playoff with Longstone.  The Ballymartin lads were up against a diminished Bryansford squad, who had travelled South to ‘Pairc Cois na Fhairaige’.  The Ballymartin lads came out fighting and took an early lead and held the lead till the dying minutes of the first half.  Half time score Ballymartin 0-08 vs. 1-06 Bryansford.  In the second half the ‘Whites’ came out and the score line started to slip away in Bryansford’s favour.  With 20 minutes gone in the second period the ‘Whites’ were a goal of difference behind.  The lads rallied and clawed back six more points to Bryansford’s 3.  This didn’t help much as the Final whistle blew the game was all square and the Ballymartin contingent were awaiting a favourable outcome between CPN and Sabhal for a playoff.  Final score in Ballymartin: Ballymartin 0-18 vs. 2-12 Bryansford.  Good luck to both Longstone and Sabhal as they fight the relegation battle on Saturday @4pm in the ‘Bridge’.

*   The ACFL Div 1 match on Sunday Oct 2nd turned out to be a real screecher.  The Ballymartin lads were up against a strong (League ranked 2nd) Castlewellan squad, who undoubtedly came into the match expecting the ‘Whites’ to be an easy two points.  Well that didn’t happen.  The lads were on the back foot throughout the match, with 3 and 4 points of a difference for the majority, with some great scores taken in the second period, saw Ballymartin close in on their target and as the final whistle blew after a Paddy Greene kick-out, the lads would have to settle for a draw.  Final score; Ballymartin 3-10 vs. 1-16 Castlewellan.  This Saturday (8th October), the lads will be hosting Bryansford @ Pats Road with a 4pm throw-in.

*   A great performance by the Eire Og lads on Friday 30th in the South Down U-14 ‘C’ Football Championship saw the lads loose out to strong Annaclone.  This was a great match with the wrong result for these young lads who have played their hearts out all year long.  Final score; Eire Og 0-09 vs. 3-09 Annaclone.

Comment: Eire Og Mentor Adrian Rooney with his son Aidan Rooney after winning the U-14 League title against Tir Na nOg, in Annaclone on Saturday afternoon Eire Og 7-08 vs.4-02 Tir na nOg.

*   Sunday saw Mayobridge GAC host the ‘Mickey Annett Memorial Run’.  As Mickey’s sister GemmaPhillips (nee Annett), is hard-core Ballymartin woman – the Club took to help promote the event via social media and on the face of it Ballymartin had some 3650 views, 53 reactions and 28 shares, whereas the Bridge had 20 reactions and 3 shares.  The success of this takes another step; the over-all winner of the ‘Mickey Annett Memorial Run’ was Ballymartin’s Noel Kerr, who happens to be closely connected to Mickey Annett.  Gemma said that she was so proud of Noel, “I was so delighted that you won first GAA runner also the First overall winner, bringing home Michael's Memorial Cup to Ballymartin and first male runner too”.  Congratulations to Noel and his family and to Mayobridge GAA for honouring a great man.

*   Limited number of tickets available.  Down GAA are delighted to announce that RTE'S Marty Morrissey has agreed to host the 1991 Celebration Dinner in the Canal Court Hotel on October 1st.  This is a celebration of their success “Wee Pete” and the Down lads, including Ballymartin’s Paul Higgins and Gregory McCartan.  There is no doubt that Marty will be a perfect host for the night and already tables are starting to SWELL.  This is a great chance to honour the men of 1991, you can book a table or chair by contacting Marie McKibbin 07802344253, there limited availability of tickets remaining.

*   The senior’s next league match is set for Friday 16 September, when the lads are away to Kilcoo for a 7pm throw-in.

*   The Eire Og U-16s were away to Saval in the Quarter Final of the Championship last Thursday evening.  Although the lads gave everything, they were up against a much stronger team and this was evident right from the throw in, with Saval notching up some great early scores.  Our lads battled to the end but unfortunately came up short and bowed out of the Championship for this season.  With Burren not fielding for the League fixture last Sunday, the season is now wrapped up for another year.  So thanks to all the players for their commitment, throughout the year and to the parents for their co-operation and a word of thanks to Glassdrumman GAC, for their help and co-operation also, to the Coaches and mentors who give their time, effort and expertise; A Big Thank you – Noel, Liam, Ryan & Patrick.

*   Annaclone was the venue on Saturday evening for the U-14s in their much anticipated League Final vs Tir Na Nog.  The boys had played the opposition 3 times in the league this year and lost twice with one victory so they knew it would be a tough game and one in which they had to be up for.  The boys had trained extremely hard in the last few weeks and all that work paid off as the boys started like a house on fire and raced into an early lead with a goal from Star forward on the Day Eoin McVeigh who got a goal in the first minute and ended up with a total of 3-1 on the day.  Martin Stevenson, Curtis McAteer, Oran Annett and Cormac McComb were showing great in the first half and it helped the boys into a 12-7 lead at the interval.  Jamie Nicholls and Conor Kelly dominated the midfield throughout the game and put in a lot of hard work on the day.  Sean Kelly in nets pulled off a string of good saves in each half and started attack after attack with some great kick outs to the attackers who were joined by young Aidan Rooney in the second half and as a result continued to dominate their opponents throughout the game.  In defence Cormac Greene, Ronan Smyth and Darragh Rooney performed brilliantly in the half back line and marked their men tight for the entire game.  The full back line of Stephen McDonald and Co-Captain Ryan McAlinden were excellent on the day with Ryan finishing off a great game with a well-deserved point before the final whistle.  This team have improved so much in the year and were over the moon by the time the final whistle went, as it brought an end to a very difficult league campaign.  Next up for the boys is the Championship Final versus Annaclone in what promises to be another great match which the boys will be ready for.  The Match is scheduled for October 1st and we hope to see you all there again to cheer the boys on.
*   The U-12 lads were on the road to Burren on Sunday 11th, and brought the game to Burren and back again.  These guys just never quit in their determination coming away with a solid result; Burren 2-09 vs. 5-05 Eire Og.

*   Training for U-10s takes place next Saturday at 10am at Ballymartin pitch, weather dependant.

*   Training for U-6/8s takes place on Saturday mornings at 9am at Ballymartin pitch, weather dependant.

*   The u-17 ladies next match is a home match against Bredagh on Sunday 18th @12:30pm.

*   Well done to our U-8 girls who took part in their first ever U-8 competitive games at a blitz in Castlewellan last Saturday.  The girls played five games against Carryduff A and B, Bryansford, Bredagh and host Castlewellan.  All girls really equipped themselves with strong performances in every game.  Many thanks to the Castlewellan club for this invite to this memorable event.  Thanks also for all the refreshments for players and to the large number of parents who were there supporting the team.

*   Lotto Numbers for Sunday 11th September 2016 were; 01, 02, 16, 20.  There was NO £12,100 jackpot winner.   Next week’s Jackpot total is NOW a staggering £12,200.  Congratulations to the SIX lucky ticket to match 3 numbers; Paula Fearon, Seaneen Trimble, Anne & Murphy Rooney, Cathy Kelly, Peggy Donnan & Claire McAllister, who win £10 each.  - If you’re NOT in, you CAN’T WIN.  Tickets are available for next week’s Lotto draw this Sunday @ £12,000 from various local sellers and outlets including; Raffertys Garage, Dunnaman Shop, Cunningham’s Butcher, Molly's Bar, Linda's Shop, First & Last and The Ballymartin Inn. Club Notes

*   Last Friday the seniors host Glenn and came away with a draw, this was great achievement giving the teams recent form.  On Monday past the lads travelled to Ballyholland 7pm.  On Friday 2 September the lads will be hosting CPN Warrenpoint with a 7pm throw-in.

*   The U-16 Championship kicked off last Thursday evening at Pat's Road with a pulsating match against Glen who are playing in a division above Eire Og.  The Home side started with a steely determination, taking some great scores and defending as a solid unit.  The Eire Og lads dominated the first half racing into a half time lead of 2-10 to 0-3, but Glen showed great resolve and threw everything at our lads in the second half.  Our defence stood resolute, the midfielders played like ‘Trojans’ and the forwards scored some fantastic counter attacking scores to finally see off a very sporting Glen side.  This was a fantastic team performance with all 15 of the Eire Og lads deserving great credit for digging deep and pulling off a great result, winning by 6-15 to 5-09.  Next up in the Championship is Clan na Banna away on Thursday evening.

*   The U-14 lads were away to Drumgath last Monday in the U-14 C Championship and gave a great display with a comfortable win; Drumgath 2-03 vs. 9-07 Eire Og.  On Monday (22 August) they hosted Annaclone in Ballymartin’s Pats Road @7pm.

*   Training for U-6/8s takes place on Saturday mornings at 9am at Ballymartin pitch.

*   Last Monday Night the girls travelled to Burren in a top of the table clash.  The girls were 3 points behind their opponents in the league going into the game.  Supporters who were at that match were in agreement this was the best exhibition of ladies football in recent years.  Both Teams put in serious effort and at times both teams were on top and at the end of the game a draw was a fair result.  This leaves the girls still chasing Burren at the top with 3 games of the league left after; the ladies hosted Loughinisland last Saturday and ran out convincing winners.  The girls started slowly in this game and didn't play their best football in the first half however in the second half they picked it up and scored a great mixture of points and goals.  The girls are putting in a serious effort at the minute as numbers are low due to holidays, exams and Injuries and they'll be looking to finish the league strong.  Next up for the ‘Whites’ are away to Rostrevor on 9th July.

*   On Monday 27th the U-17 ladies hosted Rostrevor with a 7:30 throw-in.  This will be followed by a match on Sunday 3rd July at home with Bredagh @12:30pm, again followed by a match on Wednesday July 6th away to Castlewellan.

Ballymartin GAC Club Notes on Sunday 12 June 2016 -

Club Notes

*   Ballymartin GAC will be holding their annual Golf Classic on the 17th June at Kilkeel Golf Club.  Marie McKibbin is taking bookings and sponsorships and can be contacted on 07802344253.

*   Live to Play! - Atticall GAC will be hosting a special ‘Live to Play’ event on Saturday 18th June starting @2pm till 4pm.  Live to Play is a road safety initiative promoted by Ulster GAA in conjunction with clubs and county boards.  The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness and to educate communities on how best to stay safe on the roads. The programme is aimed at young drivers (16-24) and parents but is applicable for all road users.  Each year brings startlingly statistics of people who have been involved in road traffic collisions, and behind each statistic is a family and a community whose lives have been plunged into terrible grief.  Unfortunately tragedies such as this affect all communities.

The event at Atticall will reinforce the ‘Live to Play’ message, with the support of emergency services and those who have been affected by the dangers on the Roads.

*   Last Friday we witnessed the senior team performance from last year.  The lads came out onto the pitch with a determination.  This was witnessed and verified by the scoreboard, as the ‘Whites’ took control of the game from start to finish.  Just before the first quarter, our “McLuvin”, filled the Longstone net (1-02 vs. 0-01), to the roar of the crowd with the ball wedged into the corner frame, and play continued at a reasonable pace where, at the half Ballymartin led by two (1-04 vs. 0-05).  Most of us were anticipating Ballymartin to come out after the half and give their recent form and lack-lustre second half performance.  To everyone’s delight and surprise, within thirty seconds of the second throw-in, ‘County Cathal Doyle’ found the back of the net.  This was immediately followed by Ryan O’Hare popping a point from the Longstone’s kick out (2-05 vs. 0-05).  The Stone clawed back a goal some ten minutes later and with 10 minutes of ‘Normal’ time to play there was a goal separating the two (2-06 vs. 1-06).  At the end of regulation the clock ticked on till 36 minutes were completed and the Ref blew the whistle.  Final score Ballymartin 2-06 vs. 1-08 Longstone.  This Thursday 16th June, the senior lads are away to Burren with a7:30PM throw-in, Referee – Brendan Rice.

*   On Tuesday 14 June the Minors started with an away match to Sabhal.  This Tuesday 21 June the lads host An Riocht @Pats Road with a 7:30pm throw-in.

*   On Thursday 16th June Eire Og U-16 lads will host St John Bosco @Pats Road with a 7:30pm throw-in.  The following match is @Pats Road on Thurs. 30th June.

*   The Eire Og U-14s played their last home game of the regular season on Monday night and finished the season in style with a great win against Drumgath.  The boys had a great start to the game and maintained the lead, but a few scores at the end of the first half saw the visitors come right back into it.  The second half started exactly like the first for the Eire Og boys and they scored some great goals and ran out comfortable winners.  Get well soon to young Ronan Smyth who picked up an injury in training and will be out for the next 2 months.  We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to get him back for the championship in August.
*   On Sunday 19th June the U-12 Eire Og lads will be hosting St Michael's GAC, Magheralin @Glasdrumman Pitch with an 11am throw-in, Referee; Michael A O Rourke.

*   Training for U-12 boys takes place at Glassdrumman on Tuesday evening 6:30pm.

*   We have entered the U-10’s into the Annaclone U-10 tournament on Saturday 18th June, leaving Ballymartin field at 9am.  We need to know ASAP if your child can attend thanks.  Training for U-10s takes place next Saturday at 10am at Ballymartin pitch.

*   Training for U-6/8s takes place on Saturday mornings at 9am at Ballymartin pitch.

*   The Clubs Seniors Ladies had a brilliant win on Saturday night at home to Downpatrick.  Downpatrick gave the girls their first defeat of the season so the hosts new this would be a tough battle and from the start our Ballymartin girls came out with a fantastic attitude and raced into an early lead which they held on to for the entire game.  When Downpatrick started to rally back the Girls again found that little bit extra and finished with a great goal by Lauren Cunningham who bagged a brace on the Night along with Laura Sloan.  The result on Saturday was soured at the end with Young forward Taylor Poland and Vice-Captain Orla Doyle picking up injuries, so we hope to see them getting better soon and wish them best in their recovery.  The Girls go to Burren next Monday in a ‘massive’ game with both teams locked on 21points at the top of the league.

*   The U-14 ladies have a busy schedule ahead; on Wednesday 15th June the girls host RGU Downpatrick with a 7;30pm throw-in.  On Sunday 19th the girls host Clonduff with a 12:30pm throw-in.  The following Wednesday they will host Bryansford @7:30pm.

*   Training for U-12 girls takes place on Monday evening at St. Columban’s at 6:30pm.

*   The Eire Og U-16’s played out an enthralling game of football against their neighbours, An Riocht, at Pat's Rd on Thursday 5th May and deservedly came away with the spoils.  With both teams finding it difficult to find their scoring range early on, it was Eire Og who raced into a half time lead of 2-02 to 0-03.  The home side came out after half time firing on all cylinders and notched up another 4 goals to win out by 6-06 vs. 1-09. This was an excellent team performance with all 15 lads playing great football on the night.  Last week Mitchells unfortunately failed to field.  This now leaves a four week break in the fixtures and play resumes on 16th June with a home match against St John Bosco GAC @ Pats Road Ballymartin.  Training will now take place each Thursday at 7pm until further notice.

Sinead R, Ciara R, Orla F, Katrina H, Aine F, Sinead B, Orianna McG, Rebecca C, Orla D, Ellen M, Laura S, Taylor P, Erin McD, Niamh R, Colleen R. (Subs Used. Lauren C, Carol R, Erin S, Danielle H, Subs Not Used. Tash S, Zara R.)  The ladies were on the road twice last week.  On Thursday night they travelled to Loughinisland and put in a brilliant first half performance to race in to a strong lead.  In the second half the girls died a bit however the game had been won by this stage.  They did finish strong however and finished with a couple of good goals including a goal in the last play of the game by player of the match Colleen Rafferty who finished with two good goals. On Saturday the Girls travelled to Saul missing a couple of important players and following a couple of injuries had a smaller squad than normal.  However the girls battled extremely hard and played some really good football in the first half with some phenomenal forward play and again raced into a quick lead.  This lead again wouldn't be caught and the girls finished out with another good win.  This Thursday the ladies are on the road again as they travel to Kilcoo with another big performance needed as this is the last game of the first half of the league.  Throw-in is at 7:30pm.

*   The Intermediate ladies game last week vs. Loughinisland was postponed due to the passing of team member Orla Fitzpatrick’s Father Brian Cunningham.  Thoughts are with her and family at this time.  The ladies hosted St Bronaghs, Rostrevor on Saturday evening in front of a good crowd and in a real battle came out with a 3 point victory.  The Girls started like a house on fire racing into a 1-03 to 0-01 lead, but Rostrevor took control in the second quarter and ended the half leading 0-7 to 1-3.  The Ballymartin girls rallied at Half time and came out notched up 2-02 in in the first 10 minutes unanswered.  Again Rostrevor fought back and with 5 minutes remaining the teams were tied again.  With Rostrevor on top the final score of the game came from a super counter attack in which Erin McDowell picked the ball up on the half way line and beat two girls with explosive pace and finished to the far corner of the net to secure her 3rd goal and the Whites 4th and sealed the victory.  This was the definition of a team performance and the girls are showing a real togetherness this year and a never say die attitude which bodes well heading into the summer.  Every girl played their part in this win with the defence again putting their opponents under pressure for every score and the forwards causing a lot of trouble with constant movement and interchange.  The middle of the field had a real battle against two very fit opponents but started numerous attacks and got back to help their defence endlessly.  Full time Ballymartin 4-07 vs. 2-10 St Bronaghs.  Team. Sinead R, Ciara R, Orla F, Katrina H, Aine F, Sinead B, Orianna McG, Rebecca C, Orla D, Ellen M, Laura S, Taylor P, Erin McD, Niamh R, Colleen R. (Subs Used. *   The U-16's traveled to play Burren B with a much depleted squad last Thursday evening due to seven of the team playing for St Louis in the Ulster final.  This gave a great opportunity for the rest of the lads to shine.  Morgan and James led from the front, helping Eire Og race into an early lead.  With Burren making a late comeback super-sub Paul was introduced to get a few scores and ease Eire Og past the winning post!  Well done to the St. Louis boys for winning the Ulster Final with the Ballymartin members playing a pivotal role in the victory.  Next up An Riocht at home on Thursday evening, throw-in 7:17.

*   The Seniors hosted Ballyholland last Friday which ended with the strong front of Ballyholland giving a little more than a bit of bother to Jordan Fitzpatrick in the goal – Not to say Jordan didn’t do well because fact be told he made some powerful saves, holding the visitors to one goal, whilst the defenders had more trouble preventing the visitors from dropping the balls over the bar.  Final score Ballymartin 1-05 vs. 1-14 Ballyholland.  On Monday 25th the Whites hosted Clonduff.  On Saturday 30th the Whites are on the road to Mayobridge with a 3PM throw-in.

Comments:  Ballymartin GAC Intermediate Ladies team after receiving their new kit on Saturday afternoon from Sinead Shields of JS marketing.  The girls had their opening Home League match against Mayobridge, whom they defeated (Ballymartin 8-12 vs. 5-04 Mayobridge), after a good battle and a confidence boost of a new strip.

*   It's with great sadness that we learnt of the peaceful passing of former Ballymartin player Liam Byrne RIP, of Fivemiletown, formerly the Moor.  Liam was a member of the successful championship winning team in 1955 along with his brothers Brian and Michael (Red Mick). He will be sorely missed and our heartfelt condolences go out to the Byrne family and extended family circle.  The funeral mass took place in Fivemiletown on Wednesday 13th April.  Sleep Well Liam.  Our Lady, Queen of the Gaels, Pray for Him.

*   On Monday week past, the seniors hosted Burren in their second match of the season.  This was a tough match for the recently promoted Ballymartin lads into Division 1.  The Half time @ Pats Road was Ballymartin 0-03 vs. 2-06 Burren, with the Final score Ballymartin 0-0 6 vs. 2-15 Burren.  We hope that Kevin’s injury wasn’t to severe and hope that he makes a quick recovery.  On Sunday the seniors travelled to Sabhal were they met another defeat.  We are sure the Whites would have been hoping for at least two wins out of the first three matches.  There have been great changes from the team who last season in Div 2 went 15 and zero.  We can only hope that the lads can regain some composure and plod onward.  This Friday 22nd the lads host Ballyholland @7PM.  Referee: Kevin Faloon.  This match is followed on Monday 25th also @7PM, when the Ballymartin lads host Clonduff.

*   The South Down GAA Reserve Football League (13 a side) are still in preseason mode with their first match set for Sunday 1st May 2016 @2PM when Ballymartin travel to Burren (St. Mary's).

*   The Minors host St Patricks on Tuesday 19th in Ballymartin with @ 7PM throw-in & Michael O Rourke Officiating.  Next Tuesday 26th – the Eire Og’s will host Longstone @ Pats Road with a 7PM throw-in.

*    The Eire Og U-16's were on the road again last Thursday, away to a strong Bosco side.  This was a very evenly contested match with 2 teams playing great passing & attacking football.  Our lads went into the interval 2 points down, but with belief in themselves.  They came out in the second half and got off to a great start with a well worked goal, followed by a point giving them a 2 point lead.  After both teams exchanged points, came the sucker punch with a goal against the run of play to leave us chasing the game in the final minutes.  The lads played great football and fought bravely but just couldn't catch up, losing to a score line of 2-7 to 2-9.  Each of the Eire Og lads gave it their all and should be proud of their performance in this very entertaining game.  As there is no fixture this week, training will be on Thursday evening at Pat's Rd at 6.45pm.  The next fixture is set for Thursday 28th @7 15 PM away to Burren.

*   On Monday past the (18 Apr), the Eire Ogs U-14’s were on the road to St Michael's to play Tir na nOg U-14 A.  The next fixture is set for Monday 2nd May @7PM in Drumgath.

*   The Eire Og U-12’s had a decisive win on Sunday 17th when they travelled to Newry Shamrocks 0-2 vs. 3-07 Eire Og.  Their next fixture is away to St Michael's GAC, Magheralin on Sunday 1st May with a 10:15AM throw-in.

*   Thanks to the new sponsors ‘JS Marketing’ for the New Jerseys presented to the Ballymartin Intermediate ladies, best of luck to both the sponsor and the team during the season.  The ladies began their league campaign this Saturday at home to Mayobridge.  The girls have trained extremely hard in pre-season and were well prepared for the game.  The girls flew out of the blocks and their forwards started to make this pressure show via the scoreboard with some really well worked moves and scores.  Mayobridge started to come back at the whites but the defence were holding tight and were making scoring tough for their opponents allowing the girls to go in at half time in control of the game.   In The second half Mayobridge put some great moves together themselves and came back at the hosts but Ballymartin finished the Stronger - after the introduction of some substitutions added Fresh legs to the attack.

All In all it was a great team performance to start the league.  Final score Ballymartin 8-12 vs. 5-04 Mayobridge.  They now travel to Downpatrick this Saturday 23rd Apr, against last year’s’ Junior League’ and ‘Championship League’ Champions and are Undefeated since their reformation.  Ballymartin Team: E Shields, C Rice, A Fearon, K Higgins, O McGoey, S Brannigan, J Grant, R Cunningham, O Doyle, E Marks, L Sloan, T Poland, E McDowell, L Cunningham, J Collins. Subs played: Smith, N Rogers, C Rafferty, Z Rogers , S Rooney.

*   Best wishes to Danielle Harrison who was injured recently and we hope and expect her to be recovered ASAP.  Get better sooner Danielle.

*   On Sunday 24th the U17 ladies will be hosting St. Mary's Burren with a 12:30 throw-in.  A boost here will help them move further up the league table and nothing would help more than some Home team support.

*   On Wednesday 20th Apr 2016 the U-12 Ladies will be hosting Bryansford in the opening of their league campaign, this will have 7PM throw-in.  As this is late in the evening and the weather is still quite cold please wrap up warm – especially for those sitting on the bench, bring a water bottle and gum-shield.

* Lotto Numbers for Sunday 17 April 2016 were; 01, 16, 22, 28. There was NO £10,000 jackpot winner.  Next week’s Jackpot total is NOW £10,100. *   The Eire Og U-16 's had their first home game of the new season last Thursday evening against Mitchells.  The home side got off to a blistering start rattling off a goal and 6 unanswered points to leave the travelling side playing catch up.  Mitchells battled hard and put up a good fight especially in the second half.  With the game fairly in control, Eire Og emptied the bench at half time giving everyone valuable game time.  Our lads defended well and the forwards took their scores with some well worked goals and excellent long range points.  The midfielders worked tirelessly throughout to allow the home side to run out comfortable winners.  Next up is Bosco away, tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7pm.  Players to be at Pat's Rd for 5.45pm sharp for bus to Newry Bosco.

*   Commiserations to the Down lads on Sunday after their defeat in the Dr McKenna Cup on Sunday in Pairc Esler.  Full time score Fermanagh 0-14 vs. 0-08 Down.

*   Ballymartin’s Michael Higgins was on the pitch on Sunday, in the All-Ireland Junior Club Quarter-Final Match.  Michael was playing for John Mitchels (Lancashire) 0-06 v 2-08 Templenoe GAA Club (Kerry), in Pairc na hEireann, Birmingham.

John Mitchel’s quest for All-Ireland glory got stuck in the Pairc na hEireann mud, as visitors Templenoe easily secured passage onto the semi-finals.  This was not a fair reflection on the capabilities of the Liverpool men as they did not play to their potential; barring Paraic McGuirk, the rest of the squad will no doubt be disappointed with how they fared.  Templenoe had won the Munster Championship on December 12th while the John Mitchel’s hadn’t been in competitive action since November 8th (Nine weeks without a match).  Throughout the game this stat would tell the tale; as rustiness was quite evident through Mitchel’s sloppy passing and running off the ball.  The conditions would not lend itself to good football, the bright sunny day was a bogus front for a chilly, windy afternoon with terrible underfoot conditions.  However Michael Higgins had a great attempt on goal as he raced clear of the Templenoe defence, unfortunately this was cleared off the line by a defender to the woes of the travelling ‘Liverpudlian’ support.
