Comments: The Minors lads had a fantastic match against Drumgath on Tuesday.  Here Ryan Higgins is set for receiving the high ball. Final Score; Eire Og 1-07 Vs. 0-10 Drumgath.

Comments: Ballymartin Seniors hosted Annaclone on Friday past in what turned out to be the Whites first win of the season in a very physical match, here Ballymartin’s Ryan McCullagh squeezes past the Annaclone defender and ultimately makes his score.  Final score: Ballymartin 2-12 Vs. 1-10 Annaclone.

Comments: Ballymartin’s goal keeper, Colin Trainor, takes a rest as he is captured here making one of four amazing saves, two of which were penalties.  Colin had a great game during Sunday’s win over Clonduff.   Final Score Ballymartin 3-18 Vs. 3-05 Clonduff.

Comments: Ballymartin U-14 ladies had a fantastic match against Saul on Sunday under wet and windy conditions.  Final Score; Ballymartin 7-14 vs. 3-07 Saul.

Comments: Ballymartin GAC hosted a Foundation Level Coaching Course on Sunday past.  This was facilitated be Mr Garreth Thornton, who Leads the Ulster GAA Club Coaching and Development programme.  This is part of the Course organised by our Youth Officer Mr Niall Doyle, to support the youth structure in Ballymartin GAC.

Comments: Ballymartin’s, Cathal Doyle takes a heavy hit just before he receives the ball (during Sunday’s defeat Carryduff).   Final Score Ballymartin 1-04 vs. 1-14 Carryduff.  

 

Club Notes 

*   Mr Garreth Thornton of the Ulster GAA, was on hand on Saturday past to deliver a Foundation Level Course, specifically for coaching the youth members in the GAA.  Garreth Thornton leads the Ulster GAA Club Coaching and Development programme.  This programme is designed to provide clubs with all the resources necessary to develop appropriate structures to help Clubs grow, by offering Support to the youth structure in Ballymartin GAC.   Over the next two weeks, Cillian Cromwell, a member of the Ulster GAA Key Stage One Staff, will be coaching the sessions for our U-6 & U-8’s, Cillian has been supporting our club for the past couple months.  We would encourage all our U-6 & U-8 members to join us for these special training/coaching sessions, we would strongly recommend any new members that might want to join to grab the opportunity and join NOW and be part of theses upcoming sessions.   For more info please contact: Niall Doyle, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. *   On Tuesday 10 April, the Eire Og Minors lads were away St John Bosco, with an epic match.  Eire Og lads had some great scores from Johnny and Rory and terrific blocks in from Matthew Brennan, an unfortunate number of wides from the Eire Og lads kept the tally down.  Final score Bosco 1-08 vs. 2-13 Eire Og. 

*   On Thursday 12 April, South Down U-16 League Div 2, the Eire Og lads defeated Drumgath on the road.  Final score Drumgath 0-07 vs. 7-03 Eire Og.  

*   On Friday 13 April, the Seniors lost their Ballymartin 0-05 vs. 0-09 Darragh Cross.  

*   On Sunday 15 April, the Ballymartin Senior Ladies were away to Bryansford and pulled off a great victory over the local rivals.  Final Score Bryansford 4-12 vs. 5-16 Ballymartin.  

*   On Sunday 15 April, in the Down U-12 League (Section 2), the Eire Og lads suffered defeat to Aghaderg.  Final score Aghaderg 9-09 vs. 2-05 Eire Og.  

*   On Sunday 15 April, the Ballymartin U-14 Ladies defeated Sabhaill Naomh Pádraig in a very competitive match.  Unconfirmed score Ballymartin 7-08 vs. 3-04 Saul.  

*   On Sunday 15 April, the Seniors lost to Carryduff.  Final Score: Ballymartin 1-04 vs. 1-14 Carryduff.  

*   On Tuesday 17 April, the Eire Og Minors are at Home (Pats Road, Ballymartin), for their match against Drumgath.  Throw-in is at 18:45.  

*   On Wednesday 18 April, the Ballymartin Minor Ladies are away to Clonduff with a 19:00 throw-in.

Comments: Ballymartin’s, Noel Kerr takes his scoring opportunity after scooping the ball from his own 20 meter line (during Sunday win over Atticall, in the Fr Davis Shield), sending the ball over the bar from some 30 meters out.

*   On Saturday 07 April, the Ballymartin Senior Ladies lost to a strong RGU Downpatrick in the opening match of the league.  Ballymartin 0-04 vs. 3-14 RGU.  

*   On Sunday 08 April, in the South Down U-16 League Div 2, Eire Og 2-08 vs. 3-05 Tullylish.  

*   On Sunday 08 April, in the Down U-12 League (Section 2), Eire Og 3-07 vs. 9-06 Annaclone

*   On Sunday 08 April, in the Fr. Davies Shield Final, the Ballymartin Reserves played a great game against a strong Atticall.  There was not much action going into the half, with the ‘Whites’ one point ahead.  This brightened up, as the heavy fog lifted, and the stadia lights were turned off for the second half restart.  Ballymartin took control and played a greater offensive game maintaining better possession.  Ballymartin went on as the winners making eight scores vs. Atticall’s two scores.  Ballymartin 0-14 vs. 1-06 Atticall. 

*   On Monday 09 April, South Down U-14 League, the Eire Ogs host St Michael's GAC, Magheralin in Glasdrumman @ 18:45. 

*   On Tuesday 10 April, South Down GAA Minor Football League, the Eire Og lads are a way St John Bosco with an 18:45 throw-in.  Referee: Brian Higgins.

Comments: Eire Og’s, Keelin Kearney was at it again this week against Saval Minors, here he scooped the ball, turned and filled the net, just like a good ‘Sharpe Shooter’ should.  Eire Og’s came out as comfortable winners.  Eire Og 5-18 vs. 2-08 Saval.

Comments: Ballymartin’s, Ciaran O’Hare takes one of his last scoring opportunities of the match during their one-point defeat to Longstone after a hair-raising match.   Final Score Ballymartin 2-13 vs. 4-08 Longstone.

*   The U-16 and Minor Ladies training takes place on Thursday evenings from 19:15 till 20:30 at Pats Road, Ballymartin.   
*   Thursday 05 April, the Eire Og U-16 lads are away to Burren for their Div2 league match, throw-in is at 18:30 with Referee: Kevin Mc Grath.  

*   Thursday 05 April, the Ballymartin U-16 ladies are at home to Saval for their match, throw-in is at 18:45 with Referee: Eddie Morgan.  

*   Friday 06 April, in the Division 2 League are on the road to Tullylish for a 18:45 throw-in.  Referee: Patrick Mc Daid.  Last weeks opening match against local rivals Longstone ended as a real nail-biter.  The Ballymartin lads came out at the half, on the back foot but composed themselves to take their score and had the game at a tie (2-13 vs. 4-07) 19 points apiece, with two plus minutes to go.  Ballymartin received a red in place of a second yellow and were a man down giving the stone the scoring opportunity and the opening match of the League.   

*   Saturday 07 April, the Ballymartin Senior ladies are at home to RGU Downpatrick, throw-in is at 18:45 with Referee: Eddie Morgan.

Comments: Eire Og’s, Keelin Kearney finds the netting after winning a penalty as the light fades during their match with Saul at the weekend.  Saul started strong and went into the half winning 0-05 vs. 0-03.  After some words of encouragement the Eire Og’s came out and ran through the Saul defences and came away as comfortable winners.

*   The U-16 girls had a great win away from home, defeating Dundrum in a very fast paced game.  Dundrum had the upper hand for the majority of the game but the Ballymartin girls dug deep and for the last five minutes of the game and showed great determination with the scoring; final score - Dundrum's 0-01 vs. 3-01 Ballymartin. Well done girls and thanks to the parents for their continued support.

Club Notes 

*   The Club is planning with the Ulster Council to undertake a GAA Foundation Coaching Course at Ballymartin before Easter, subject to the availability of the course organisers.  The course is a mandatory requirement for those who assist in coaching our underage teams.  It is anticipated that many parents and senior men and ladies’ players who have assisted coaching sessions over recent years will attend this enjoyable and interactive course for beginners.  Anyone wanting to attend must urgently register with the Youth Officer Niall Doyle; This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ”.  After a very successful first meeting with the Ulster council coach, we will deliver a coaching session to the Eire Og U-16 Boys squad on Thursday 15th March, at 19:30, Pats Road, Ballymartin.  This session is open to all mentors to come along and see how a professional coach does it, see how much the boys enjoy it and maybe take a few things away from it!  The following Monday, 19th March, we will host in Pats Road, Ballymartin again, a ‘Coach the Coaches Course’, it is important that you all do your utmost to clear your calendar for the event and come down for what we believe is a once in a month of Sundays opportunity.  I say it again, " We owe it to the children we mentor to learn from this and in turn they will avail from our improved coaching."  This will be followed up with, two more sessions.  I would urge the mentors to suggest what they want the two follow up coaching sessions to consist off, so will you all reply ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Club Notes 

*   It is with sadness that we notify our extended family on the death of Mary Rodgers.  Our heartfelt sympathy to Joey Rodgers & their children; Mary, Eileen, Jennifer, Declan, Noel, Adrian, Martin, Patricia & Attracta, also to the extended family.  Mary, Queen of the Gaels, Pray for her.  

*   It is with sadness that we notify our extended family on the death of Mary Hardy, mother Kathleen, Michael, Marie, John, and Jacinta, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and entire family circle.  Mary, Queen of the Gaels, Pray for her.  

*   Registration will take place on Sunday 18th February at Pats Road from 1:30pm to 2:30pm.   

*   Congratulations to our Lauren Cunningham of the Down Ladies GAA, who are delighted to announce their Captain for 2018 ass; Orla Boyle (RGU), Vice Captains are Chara Laverty (Kilcoo) & Lauren Cunningham (Ballymartin).  Congratulations Ladies and good luck in the future.   We would like to wish Lauren a speedy recovery after her operation.  

*   Good luck to Jordan Fitzpatrick and Liverpool Hope University, who will be heading to Dublin for the Electric Ireland Sigerson weekend after winning the British Universities qualifying competition in Manchester.  Jordan and his team will want to be the first University in Britain, to go home and win an ‘All Ireland’ Title.

*   Anyone knows of anyone willing to help on a Sunday night 8.45pm – 9.45pm – ONE Sunday in the month.  We need at least three individuals to add to Lotto Rota.  We are trying to populate the Lotto Rota teams for 2018.  

*   Underage Ladies training continues each Tuesday evening in St Columban’s College from 6:45 to 7:45pm.  Followed by the Minor & Senior Ladies squads from 8 till 9pm.  

*   The date for the South Down Table Quiz will be held on Friday 2nd March in Clonduff Club commencing at 8pm.  

*   This year’s 2018 Down GAA All County Football League, Division 2, Sponsored by O’Neills will commence on 3rd April with a home game against Longstone.  

*   Ulster Ladies are delighted to announce that applications are now available for Gaeltacht Scholarship 2018.  We have six €250 scholarships available.  Please contact the Club Secretary for an Application Form.  Forms must be returned by Tuesday 27th March 2018.

*   Ballymartin GAC’s Dinner Dance took place last Saturday 3rd February 2018, in the newly refurbished Flagstaff Lodge, Newry.  This was another very successful Ballymartin GAC Dinner Dance.  The Committee would like to thank everyone who attended and to all those who supported the event in any way.  Special thanks to the Staff of the Flagstaff Lodge, Newry for their excellent venue and five-star meal & service, to Down Ladies Secretary, Moira Hawkins, for giving her time to support and recognise the Ballymartin Ladies squad’s efforts through the 2017 Season, also to the man with the beats Mr Paul ‘Tiny’ Rooney, for the after-dinner entertainment.  All Images taken by Ballymartin GAC unless stated.

Comments:   The Ballymartin Senior Ladies Head Coach Mr Declan Grant received a Special Recognition from Down Ladies Secretary, Moira Hawkins, for his role with the Ladies teams and the great success achieved in 2017.

Comments:   Michael Byrne was called to hand over the Johnny Byrne Trophy to our Youth Officer Mr Niall Doyle, unfortunately Mr Doyle was not able to attend due to work commitments.   The award was received in his absence by Club Secretary Mr Damien Phillips.

Comments:   This year the Joe Haughian Hall Of Fame Award went to one of the legends of the Ballymartin ’55 squad.  A deserving recipient Mr Brian ‘The Quiet Man’ Byrne, played for the County in many roles and eras.  Brian was presented the Joe Haughian Trophy by Mrs Rosemary Rogers.

Comments:   The outgoing Club President Mr Jim Collins welcomed the newly elected Club President Mr Michael Byrne.  The Chairman Mr Barry Cunningham thanked Mr Collins for all the work and service to the Club during his term as President and through subsequent years.

Comments:   The very successful Ballymartin Ladies team were an impressive and formidable team in the 2017 Season and they couldn’t wait to honour the Main Man Mr Declan Grant.  The Team Captain Laura Sloan gave a wonderful speech noting his qualities as leader and thanked him from the entire team to a standing ovation.

Comments:   Special congratulations to St Columbans College U-16 football squad and their Head Coach Mr Steven Poacher in their success in the Ulster School GAA Corn Cuchulainn Cup Final, beating St. Joseph's Coalisland 0-05 vs. 1-07 St Columban's Kilkeel, played in the Abbey CBS Newry, last week.   Photo Mrs Claire Higgins.  

 

*   Ballymartin GAC Chairman Barry Cunningham commended all the Coaching staff and Mentors, specially those of the ladies’ teams that had come up trumps in their League Campaigns in 2017, Intermediate Ladies, Minor Ladies, U-16 Ladies & the very successful U-14 Ladies.

*   A Chara, the fixtures for Felix Darby Cup & Fr. Davies Shield have been released.  The 1st round winners progress to the quarter finals of the Felix Darby Cup, the losers progress to quarter finals of Fr Davies Shield.  (Every team has 2 games minimum).  The games are fixed for Sunday 25th February at 2pm (e.t if necessary), but if clubs wish to play at a different date or under lights etc (before 25th Feb), please contact other club and let Michael O'Rourke know the new date and time so that a Referee can be notified.  If a club pitch is unplayable game to be switched to opponent’s venue.  Atticall v Annaclone, Ballymartin v An Riocht, Burren 3rds v Glenn, Clonduff 3rds v Bosco, Mayobridge 3rds v Drumgath, Saval v Clann na Banna AND Tullylish v St. Michaels.  Is Mise, Michael O'Rourke.

*   Volunteering is at the heart of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, with which this event could not operate smoothly.  Hosting the Ulster Fleadh is an enormous privilege, but the event cannot be a success without necessary volunteers.  Volunteers are required for traffic, carpark marshalling, entrance kiosks, programme selling, information desk, litter picking teams and door keeping at the competition venue.  There is something for everyone!  If you can spare a few hours over the weekend, please fill out the form on our website.  www.ulsterfleadh.com/volunteering/  All essential training/briefing will be given.

Comments:    The Ballymartin GAC Ladies, Underage Managers continue their Pre-Season training regime in St Columbans College from 6:45 – 7:45 each Tuesday evening – ALL current members can bring a friend or two for a tester session.  All new members VERY welcome.

*   Ballymartin GAC held their Annual General Meeting on Sunday 10th December in the Club Rooms @ ‘Pairc Cois na Fhairaige’, Pats Road Ballymartin @2pm.  The AGM was a great opportunity for the Club Committee to inform all ‘Full Members’ of our club as to what has been done over the course of the past year and to set the foundations for the coming year, giving our Full Members the chance to express their views and ideas on all aspects of the running of the club and the playing and organising of matches.  The Club Secretary gave a full account of all activities and thanked all out-going Committee Members.
